TAFE Tasmania
Hobart Campus, Tasmania
The challenge of the TAFE Tasmania project was the refurbishment and part reconstruction of an existing multistory inner-city campus, whilst remaining in full occupation.
The building needed to be functional; the design innovative. Functionally the building accommodated a wide range of course types, from hairdressing to automotive, IT and access learning. The new plan also included a re-design of the student and teacher breakout areas, a café and retail space.
The design approach by BPSM was to create a cosmopolitan feel in the non-teaching areas along the line of café society, meeting place, street life, hustle and bustle. This included, with Hobart City Council approval, encroaching on the street footpath with a terrace space opening off the café.
